a simple morning routine

*It’s only simple if you do it every morning*

We all have some sort of early routine after we wake up, so the “early” can be speculative. Chances are, a few of us are waking up in the morning, mid day, and the afternoon. All the same though, we are doing particular things right after we decide to get up.

Take this moment to reflect on what you did first after waking up.

If you are like me, the first thing I find myself doing most days is shutting off my alarm(if I don’t, I’ve likely missed out on something). Second, of course since my phone is already in my hand(Yes, I use my phone as an alarm), I go through all of my notifications(If any *sad*) and check various medias. These “medias” can include apps like Instagram, Snapchat, etc.

So now, have you already taken a chance to reflect on what you did second?

Most of my morning doesn’t really start until I’m able to stop the scrolling train and get myself out of bed. Which, some days are certainly easier than others, especially considering the amounts of sleep I did or didn’t get that particular night. Thereafter, it doesn't really start to move until I am able to go and make myself some sort of caffeinated beverage, usually coffee.

While most days I prefer to make a pour-over(I can go into the specifics of that in another article), I also have days where I want something not as simple or intense. On those days, I usually will make an espresso-esk espresso(Made with an aeropress, a fine grind, and far less water than usual), paired with some steamed milk from a stovetop steamer. Making sort of latte visually and from taste, but technically isn’t a latte by my standards based on the “espresso.”

Once I’ve finally made myself some sort of coffee, I sit or stand at my desk(I have a sit-stand desk from Autonomous). Whether I’ve decided to use my Mac Pro or my PC kind of depends on how I want my morning to go. If I’ve decided to use my Mac Pro, I’m more likely to have a productive morning(By my own standards of productivity), whereas if I have chosen to use my PC(which so happens to be a gaming PC), I may start off productive but will eventually get lured into whatever game I have been playing.

Typically I keep my starting tasks fairly simple as to not wear myself out too quickly. I will check my email(s), practice typing for a bit(I built custom keyboards and I have to use them somehow), and then usually end it with checking this exact site, Medium.

Have you been making a list of your early routine?

The simple routine that I have chosen to participate in daily has nothing to do with conquering huge tasks, but, it has enough of a build up to get my momentum moving fast enough to start or maybe even finish large tasks. For myself, the hard part has always been starting tasks, so if I start my morning with a few simple tasks already completed, doing anything else thereafter is much easier and comes with less resistance.

Let’s maybe even finish those large tasks.

I hope that this small article was able to give you a small insight into the variety of mornings(or early routines) that different individuals can have. Perhaps you’ve followed along long enough to even make your own little list of things you do every morning or maybe even that you’d like to start doing every morning.

Regardless, you’ve made it this far.

Thank you reading my article, your time and attention are deeply appreciated.
